Tucked away in North Carlton somewhat far away from the Italian end of Lygon Street is this spacious cafe. The decor is interesting – there’s a refreshing tinge of the yesteryear in the ceramic tiles that adorn the front counter, which is in turn balanced by a good measure of industrialism found in the crates for lamps, exposed brick walls and the oft-seen play of wood and metal furnishing. A massive piece of graffiti of what I assume to represent the “Naughty Boy” occupies one side of the wall.
To be honest I haven’t tried much of the food here – I came straight for the freakshakes because images of them keep popping up on my Instagram newsfeed. This place seemed to me to be as popular as Muharam Cafe in terms of being known for these sinful dessert/milkshake combos. Naughty Boy actually refers to their milkshakes as “Insta Shakes”, lest you forget to photograph your supermodel drink to death when it arrives and swiftly share it with your social network!
The menu features three choices: Chocolate & Nutella (mmm…), Salted Caramel (also mmm…) and Pavlova (hmm…). I had Nutella and Salted Caramel, and I think both were of a higher quality than the ones I tried at Muharam Cafe. Three reasons: They actually tasted less sweet than they looked, had more meaningfully edible garnishes, and I got the wow factor with how these looked (*up comes the phone camera).
There are healthier options for those who would prefer to spectate rather than participate in the consumption of freakshakes: delicious fruit and vegetable smoothies are on the menu. The food on offer looks pretty good on the cafe’s online menu so I will be visiting again! If you haven’t tried a freakshake and would like to, I recommend starting here.
